The original shelf layout limited usable space and made handgun access less efficient.
Shelf Redesign
The interior shelves were reconfigured to improve vertical spacing and create a more structured layout for handgun storage.
In this setup, 8 1/4" between shelves provides the right clearance to access handguns in the back of the safe without removing the rack, including large full-size pistols.
For reference, a full-size 1911 on the rack in its shipping configuration measures approximately 6 3/4" high, providing a real-world baseline for planning shelf height.
After with 8 Gun Armory Racks
The redesigned interior now supports structured, upright storage using 8 Gun Armory Racks, dramatically increasing usable capacity while keeping every handgun visible and separated.
This example uses 2 shelf levels with 4 racks per shelf, creating a controlled and repeatable storage layout.

Capacity & Space Calculation (Photo Example)
4 racks × 8 guns per rack = 32 handguns per shelf
2 shelves × 32 handguns = 64 handguns total
With shelf spacing set at approximately 8 1/4" per level to allow access to larger handguns in the back of the safe, the vertical space used for these 64 guns is:
2 levels × 8 1/4" = 16 1/2" of vertical interior space
That means 64 handguns are stored in just 16.5 inches of height, while remaining upright, separated, visible, and accessible — a level of handgun density that flat shelf storage cannot achieve.

nice work by the owner. I always tell people to prevent shelf sag go to lowes and get 3/4" aluminum U channel in 4 or 8 ft sticks. The little notches that the shelves sit on fit perfectly in it and your shelf is supported all the way across. Or ditch the particle board and make wooden ones but the aluminum set me back less than the cost of wood.
